Del Mar is a short-term volatility breakout system designed with the goal of successfully trading the stock index futures. The volatile market environments and explosive moves offered by the index futures play best into the style and characteristics of the system. Del Mar is an active system that stays in a position for about two days and trades an average ten times per month, per market.
Miles Dunbar, architect of the Del Mar trading system, is the publisher of OnTheClose.com and the former publisher for one of the largest newsletters in the futures industry, Commodity Timing. Miles is an accomplished systems developer, trader and market technician. His articles have been published in Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities and Omega Magazine.

Prior to his position at Commodity Timing, Miles served as the product manager for Omega Research's TradeStation. He is one of the industry's foremost experts in Easy Language programming. He has traveled extensively teaching Easy Language and programming systems for many of the world's best traders.
Del Mar can be traded on most index futures products; this includes the S&P;, NASDAQ, Russell and the MidCap. However, the developer recommends that the best portfolio is a combination of the S&P; and the NASDAQ. Factors such as illiquidity may limit the systems effectiveness on indexes other than S&P; and NASDAQ.
Del Mar is a volatility-based system often called a self-adaptive system. Del Mar attempts to change quickly and adapt to current market conditions. Since the system looks back no further than three days only the most current information is used and this also helps to keep the system flexible.

A combination of patterns, expansion entries, and exits allows Del Mar to reverse positions to capture new short-term trends. This is done not at the expense of the system’s goal to hold on to large and strong directional moves.

Del Mar always has a stop in the market. Capital preservation is a key part of why the system does so well. There are no profit targets, as these tend to limit large potential moves. Instead an ingenious trailing stop is incorporated that gives the market enough room to breath but also quickly catches reversals to get the most out of a market move. Keep in mind that stops are no guarantee that losses will be limited or profits captured. Like the markets and systems themselves there are inherent limitations. Market conditions can limit the effectiveness of the use of stop orders.

Each person’s portfolio is a representation of their own risk tolerances and investing goals. Del Mar can fit into a wide range of portfolio sizes. Larger accounts can diversify their risk with a short-term system trading the big contracts of the S&P; and NASDAQ. Del Mar can be traded on the mini contracts as well to scale with a wide range of account sizes. Using mini contracts also gives the greatest flexibility to a portfolio as leverage can be adjusted at smaller increments than with the full size contracts.

Del Mar regularly sells for $2500. However, Trade Center, Inc. clients are entitled to a discounted price of $2200. This cost is based on a single user license. Additional cost savings may be obtained when purchasing multiple trading systems offered by the developer.
Del Mar includes a manual that spells out the logic of the system and educates on how best to handle orders. For those with TradeStation, the system is provided for versions 2000i and higher. A simple calculator is also provided to help generate the orders from the system. This is a windows based program that requires you to manually enter the open, high, low, and close prices for the markets you are trading.
